Dubai’s Al Jalila Children’s Specialty Hospital Wins Prestigious ‘Future Health Project’ Award at the World Architecture Festival in Barcelona

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, Monday, December 14th 2009 [ME NewsWire]:

- Dubai home to the only specialised children’s hospital in the region

- Al Jalila’s Children’s Speciality Hospital to be completed by 2011

The Al Jalila Children’s Speciality Hospital, which was ordered to be built by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai as a gift to the children of the nation, won the ‘Future Health Projects’ Award at the prestigious World Architecture Festival (WAF) in Barcelona, Spain recently.

The UAE faced stringent competition from around the world as the WAF received 210 entries in the ‘Future Health Projects’ category. Fifty-two jury members reviewed the selection and made their final decision based on parameters such as functionality of the building, firmness, delight and appeal.

The 200 bed Al Jalila Hospital, which will specialise in paediatric care, was selected out of 210 other entries from across the globe. The design of the state-of-the-art hospital, the only one of its kind in the region, takes into account energy saving strategies to facilitate reductions in the global energy consumption. More than 5,000 m2 of solar panels will be located on the roof of the hospital and will cover the parking places. In addition, the water treatment concept will facilitate reusing water for specific purposes, like irrigation.

The hospital will be equipped with a dedicated helipad that will be directly connected to the emergency department to accommodate any type of paediatric emergencies, excluding road traffic accidents.

Upon completion in 2011, the hospital will have a full-fledged Emergency Department and Outpatient Department, supported by a comprehensive Imaging and Radiology Department, Nuclear Medicine, Clinical Laboratory Department, Hospital Pharmacy, Rehabilitation Services and several others specialities and departments.

His Excellency Qadhi Saeed Al Murooshid, Director General of the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) said “It is a privilege to receive recognition at international levels where the very best architectural projects across the world compete with one another. The Al Jalila Hospital is a vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai’s and is the only specialised hospital for children in the region.”

“To win an award at a platform where the best critics in the field of architecture from around the world come together, gives us a sense of achievement and encourages us to further excel in the field of healthcare.”

The WAF is one of the most important events that highlights architectural work from around the globe. It is a platform where the world’s architectural visionaries come together every year.
